Kinematic Evidence of Minor Mergers in Normal Sa Galaxies

چکیده

A detailed study of nearby, morphologically normal Sa galaxies reveals that about half show some spectrocopic evidence for kinematically distinct components despite their undisturbed optical appearance. In eight of nine objects mapped in the 21 cm HI line, the HI distribution extends far outside the optical disk and warps of the HI disk are complex. The multiwavelength evidence can be interpreted in terms of the kinematic “memory” of past minor mergers in objects that otherwise exhibit no morphological signs of interaction.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Kinematic Clues to the Formation and Evolution of Galaxies Kinematic Clues to the Formation and Evolution of Galaxies

To my mother, for her love of science and the curiosity she awakened in me iii iv Abstract This work investigates clues to galaxy evolution in the internal gas and stellar kinematics of 200 nearby galaxies, representing all morphological types and spanning luminosities from M B = ?23 to ?15. The frequency and morphology distribution of galaxies with counterrotating gas and stars provides fossil...

On the Role of Minor Galaxy Mergers in the Formation of Active Galactic Nuclei.

The large-scale ( approximately 100 kpc) environments of Seyfert galaxies are not significantly different from those of non-Seyfert galaxies. In the context of the interaction model of the formation of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), it has thus been proposed that AGNs form via "minor mergers" of large disk galaxies with smaller companions. We test this hypothesis by comparing the nuclear spectr...

We use integral field spectroscopy, from the SWIFT and PALM3K instruments, to perform a spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis of four nearby highly star-forming ‘green pea’ (GP) galaxies, that are likely analogues of high-redshift star-forming systems. By studying emission-line maps in Hα, [N II] λλ6548,6584 and [S II] λλ6716,6731, we explore the kinematic morphology of these systems and co...

The Kinematic Structure of Merger Remnants

We use numerical simulations to study the kinematic structure of remnants formed from mergers of equal-mass disk galaxies. In particular, we show that remnants of dissipational mergers, which include the radiative cooling of gas, star formation, feedback from supernovae, and the growth of supermassive black holes, are smaller, rounder, have, on average, a larger central velocity dispersion, and...
